Syd Enstone RIP

SYDNEY WILLIAM ENSTONE aka Syd has died at Stratford on Saturday 16th May aged 93.
Sydney was trainer to Cubbington Albion in the late 1940s’ and early 1950s’ then later joined Lockheed Leamington in a similar position which he held for many years.
By 54/55 he was looking after the Reserve team but was soon involved with the senior side, a position he held for roughly two decades and his ability to get the whole squad fit was to pay dividends as the Brakes chased honours. Birmingham League runners-up in 1954/55 was the starting point.
The Birmingham Senior cup was won in 1956/57 against Redditch, losing finalists the following season to Moor Green and to Stourbridge in 58/59. Towards the end of season 1961/62 Syd got ducked in the bath in successive weeks, the first was to celebrate winning the league title and the second time was at Highfield Road after Brakes collected the Birmingham Senior cup defeating Rugby Town 5-1.
Stratford Town beat Lockheed in the Senior cup final of 1962/63 season but the club were champions again under the new title of the West Midlands (Regional) league. The Brakes moved to the Midland Counties League and in their second season were champions.
There was a story doing the rounds at the Lockheed factory about Syd who left work an hour early because of his leg but on the touchline, his speed off the mark to tend to an injured Brake was a lot faster than expected.
Our deepest sympathy goes to his sons Howard, Nick, Phillip and Mark and their wives Gwen, Wendy, Julie and Pauline. Sydney was a granddad and a great granddad, a brother to Cath, Muriel and the late Ernie, also an uncle to many.
