LEAMINGTON 2 v COUNTY SPORTS RESERVES 1
Midland Combination Division Two
Sat 2 Sep 00

By Roger Vincent

The Bank Cheats - Official

"Penalty"! the North Bank roared. "Come on ref., definite penalty". Now, I have a confession - no way was it a penalty and we knew it. But such is the power of the crowd that the referee was convinced and we won the game 2-1 (Josh Blake 2). Before the tumble in the box that gave us our chance we had the feeling that the team would not get a 2nd goal to break the deadlock; there were plenty of attacks on the County goal but it was just that sort of game.

Overcome by collective guilt, though I must say nobody looked really concerned, the North End tried to assuage its feelings of remorse with the familiar chant "he fell over, he fell over". It's a common enough football chant but not one usually directed at your own player.

It must have worked because, as far as I could see, everybody went home happy.
