| LEAMINGTON 7 v WEST MIDLANDS POLICE RESERVES 0 Midland Combination Division Two |
Sat 9 Sep 00 |
By Roger Vincent We Fought the Law and We WonThe North Bank was starting to get into its stride, or should I say voice. It's intriguing how some chants seem to emerge, unplanned. Perhaps, in retrospect, "Lemmie, Lemmie, Lemmie from Motorhead" lacked a certain relevance and was soon superseded by "Lemmie, Lemmie, Lemmie, Lemmie, Leamington"! The lustiest rendering, however, was reserved for "We fought the law and we won". There was also some chant, to do with bacon I think, but being a cultured sort of bloke I didn't really understand that one. It was also nice to see some fancy dress being introduced for this particular match; the local shops must have done a roaring trade in fake police helmets. I remember thinking at one point that, strangely, the opposition didn't seem so downhearted as one would expect. Though Josh Blake seemed to score at will (just the 5 this time with Brian Agar and Si Wickson 1 apiece) there were some good-humoured exchanges between the Police defence (i.e. all their team) and the North Bank. I think they just enjoyed playing in front of a crowd - or maybe they were clocking features for the identikit pictures when, later, they reminisced on the day's events and brought home the bacon.
