| KENILWORTH WARDENS 0 v LEAMINGTON 4 Midland Combination Challenge Vase First round |
Sat 21 Oct 00 |
By Roger Vincent Wading Wardens Wilt AwayThe good burghers of Kenilworth peered from behind twitching curtains. What was going on? My car had been waved back from the entrance to the ground and told to "go down there", with frantic pointing down a residential street. I pulled in on the side of the road along with other cars that seemed to be coming from all directions. My first thought was "I'm surprised they don't get complaints" but I later understood that the normal 'crowd' was just about double figures, presumably plus a dog. Normally they don't even charge entrance; they did for this game even though there wasn't a programme. Our hero was Brian Agar, not just because he got 2 goals (Josh Blake and Baz Shearsby got the others) but because he prompted, chivvied and drove the team through a veritable mud bath for 90 minutes. I was getting different perspectives on the game just by standing still and sinking into the morass. If I hadn't kept on the move I'd have been as high as a corner flag by the end. Oh, I forgot, there was a dog - but he was one of ours; the alsatian from the North Bank complete with yellow and black scarf. We beat them on the dog-count as well.
