By Roger Vincent A Foggy Day in Lichfield Town…… was not one of the songs sung by a mobile North Bank at Lichfield Enots on Saturday 23 December, but foggy it was, and dark, dank and cold as well. The too long grass had the added disadvantage of obscuring ubiquitous dog turds. I don't know how many dogs live in Lichfield but I know where they go to the toilet - at least one player changed his shorts at half-time. We'd only just squidged our way to stand behind the home goalkeeper when the first goal went in followed shortly by our second, Simon Wickson the first from a huge throw-in by Steve Thompson and Stuart Hepburn the second, his first for the club. From Turd Bank our media officer, Craig Barnes, 'phoned live reports to a Warwickshire local radio station, The Bear. On a nod from Craig the North Bankers provided background by singing lustily while our intrepid reporter was on air reporting a goal. We came a little unstuck with goal 2 as our air-time was delayed sufficiently for our ecstatic cheering to accompany a stoppage in play with the trainer on and Enots waiting to take a corner up the other end. Lights flickered on over Lichfield at half time emphasising the increasing gloom. An Enots' man (their supporter?) sold us all raffle tickets - "hope you don't mind but we don't usually get a crowd". Second-half goals from Brian Agar and a long-distance screamer from Liam McGovern, also his first for the club, completed the scoring at 4-0. Two brilliant saves from the Enots' goalie, despite constant discouragement from North Bankers, kept the score down. Several of us shook his hand at full-time. As my shoes warmed up whilst driving home through the fog the sweet smell of success was steadily fractured by the more pungent pong of those who play on the pitch the rest of the time. Oh, and rumour has it that the ref. won the raffle.
