Sat 4 May 02 |
By Roger Vincent Ton-Up TommoOn a sunny morning at the New Windmill, with an 11:30 ko due to the FA Cup, Brakes turned in a stunning performance less than 48hrs after their previous game. 507 fans saw Jamie Barr get his first for the club in the 27th, a minute before youth team goalkeeper, Umbi Sidhu, making his senior debut, had his first touch. Steve Thompson scored Brakes' 100th league goal before the break and Blake and Mort added 2 more in the second half for an 11th straight league win in probably the most entertaining and comprehensive Brakes' performance of the season. Amrit "Umbi" Sidhu made his debut in goal from the youth team as Richard Morris had to work. He had no contact with the ball until the 28th minute, when he kicked a back-pass upfield, such was the superiority of Brakes on the day. Agar was in scintillating form using his close skills, and ability to hold the ball, to good effect. Wickson drove just wide in the 2nd minute after a build up involving Agar and Thompson then, 3 minutes later, Thompson dived to just miss an Agar cross with his head. An Agar overhead kick in the 6th was close and, 5 minutes later, he turned brilliantly on the goal-line for a cross that just eluded the strikers. By the 17th minute frustrated Cadbury had received their second yellow. Brakes' pressure eventually was rewarded when Mort ran down the right and crossed for Barr, running in from the left, to head home powerfully in the 27th to make it 1-0 with his first, club goal. In the 28th Sidhu made his first contact with the ball clearing upfield from a backpass but, within minutes, he made an important save from a rare, Cadbury attack. The influential Timms set up Brakes' second goal with a throw-in to Agar who crossed for Thompson to swivel and drive into the corner to make it 2-0 in the 39th and notch Brakes' 100th league goal of the season. Good to see Messrs Hucker and Brady doing the half-time presentations to the finalists of a "World Cup" organised by The Observer local paper, the final of which took place on the pitch before today's game. Local middle schools had done projects on different countries which they then represented in a knock-out tournament. For the record, China (St Margaret's) beat France (Priors Field) in the final. Eden came on for the injured Nicholls at the start of the second half. There was a concern that Brakes, who must be tired after so many games since the beginning of April, would sit back a little, but if anything the second half display was even better. It was pleasing to see Wickson playing with all his old vigour and skill after such a long lay-off. Timms flicked cleverly for the top corner in the 49th only to see it tipped over and then had a strong drive beaten out in the 57th after a measured, Mort pass. Blake came on for Wickson in the 66th and had soon unlocked the Cadbury defence once more. Eden was displaying his silky skills to good effect and, in the 70th, stroked a measured pass into the path of Blake who made it 3-0 when he smashed the ball, clinically, low and hard into the corner of the net. Eden now turned on the skills and was unlucky twice before being involved in an intricate, interplay of passes with Agar, Blake and Thompson which ended with Mort driving home from short range to make it 4-0 in the 78th. It almost doesn't need saying these days but Walker and Sidwell were performing in defence like seasoned professionals with Gregory putting in his usual, competent performance. Sidhu rose well to gather a dangerous ball in the 82nd and must be pleased with his debut, all the more impressive in that he had long periods of inactivity. The commanding Mort strove for his second goal as Brakes continued to have most of the play on a day where every player played well, the sun shone (mostly) and the wind was only intermittent. And we still had time to go home and watch another match being played in Cardiff on the same day - nowhere near as good. Leamington: Umbi Sidhu, Simon Walker, Jamie Barr, Tom Sidwell, Andy
Gregory, Darren Timms, Nick Mort, Simon Wickson (Josh Blake 66), Paul Nicholls
