Coleshill Double Over Brakes In Another Single Goal Defeat

A grey mist swept in from the direction of the Fosse, thickening throughout the game though the moon was always roundly visible in a clear sky. About 54 people saw this standing under a sea of breath and mist which made everything damp but was not particularly cold for November. Joe Wright, who comes with an impressive goalscoring history, made his Brakes' debut and did enough to show that he will prove a fine acquisition when he settles into the team.

Coleshill, who had won 3-1 in their league opener at home to Brakes, were first to threaten and Morgan did well to block what seemed a certain goal in only the 2nd minute. But Brakes played some good football in the first half after this let-off and a fluid movement between Powell and Wright set up Lewis in the 7th for a shot that was just wide.

Leaver was showing well but was caught offside more than once before releasing a strong shot in the 17th that skimmed the bar. But it wasn't all Leamington and Morgan made another tremendous save in the 19th. With the mist rolling in like sea-waves it began to look doubtful if the match would finish but both ends were still visible at half-time with the score 0-0.

All the scoring took place in six second-half minutes and it was first blood to Coleshill with the ball driven in for 0-1 in the 53rd. Standing behind the Coleshill goal, the theory being that I could see more clearly if I wasn't looking into lights from the side, I had no clear view of this goal but was on hand to suck in Brakes' goal when a Kitchen corner was touched back by Wright and, after a scramble in the goalmouth, poked home by arch-predator Lewis for 1-1 in the 58th. But, with the mist now obscuring anything that happened at the faraway Harbury Lane end, I heard a thump, followed by Coleshill cries of delight, less than a minute later in the 59th, a superb volley I was told later, 1-2.

So far this was similar to the match at Coleshill where an early Coleshill goal was equalised, by Lewis, but Coleshill restored their lead within a minute. On that occasion Coleshill got a flattering third when Brakes pushed upfield but this time it was Brakes who could have scored as they piled on the pressure in the final few minutes. Leaver was just over the bar in the 89th then Rellis saw his shot cleared off the line for what was to prove Brakes' final chance.
