Brakes celebrate in style as MFA trophy comes to New Windmill

On the day that they were presented with the Polymac Services League trophy, Brakes overwhelmed their visitors to run out worthy winners and set a new seasonal win record.

The day belonged to everyone, from those who organise the car parking right through to the players and the management team. But, for Josh Blake, this must surely have been the most special of days. He scored the very first goal on the New Windmill Ground in August 2000 against Enville Athletic and here he put four past Dynamo to take his tally for the club to 166 (139 in the league and 27 in cups) to join the all-time greats who have played since Leamington Town was founded in 1891.

Blake got on the scoresheet as early as the 12th minute, converting a cross from the right from the excellent Jamie Towers. That Brakes didn't add to their tally until five minutes before half-time was a mystery, given the amount of possession that they had. But, after visiting 'keeper, Matt Nurse, had pushed a long-range Andy Gregory shot over the bar, James Husband took the resultant corner and Towers himself was on hand to head home through a crowded goalmouth.

Any hopes that Dynamo had of a comeback were dashed within one minute of the restart when Blake steered home a great cross from Jon Adams over the top of the defence. It ws 4-0 in the 52nd minute as Blake slotted home another cross from Towers.

The fifth and final goal came with twenty minutes to go when Dynamo captain Rickey Nurse slipped and substitute Tom James gratefully picked up the ball to cross to Blake who made no mistake from close range for his fourth of the match.

Chances were few and far between for the visitors, although the Brakes crossbar was rattled in the first half and they had a goal disallowed (as did Brakes). But taken overall, this was a pretty one-sided encounter that saw Brakes chalk up their 32nd victory of the season, beating the MFA record set by Stourbridge in 2002/03. It also took them within two of Stourbridge's points record of 101 and this is the target for Tuesday night's match at Market Drayton Town.

As the bubbly flowed, a drenched Jason Cadden said, "It has been a great adventure and the lads deserve their success. We set out seven years ago to do the best that we could and see how far we could go. To have achieved four promotions, including three championships, is something special. Josh Blake set the ball rolling scoring the first goal back in the year 2000 and, with four goals today, he shows no sign of stopping yet."
