Jim Watson RIP

Paul Vanes writes:

JAMES (Jim) WATSON born 5th March 1937, died 23rd July 2015Jim Watson

Another ex-Brake has passed away, former manager Jim Watson who was given possibly the hardest job imaginable, to take over in December 1983 from Graham Allner who had moved to Kidderminster Harriers.

Jim gained experience playing for Walsall Colts and Reserves being turning professional in May 1955 making his solitary appearance for the first team in 55/56 and he was retained for the following season as a full back. Mr. Watson moved into non-league football and was on the books of Dartford, Stourbridge, Rugby Town joining Lockheed Leamington in the 1962 close season but being unable to displace either Geoff Coleman or Mick Lane left the club that November.

As a manager Mr. Watson was in charge of Valley Sports Rugby from 1971 to 1973 in the United Counties League, Bedworth Town, was an assistant manager at AP Leamington and was later asked to replace Graham Allner after he had moved to Kidderminster Harriers as the team slowly disintegrated around him. Over the remaining season and the early part of 1984/85 Jim bought in a new team but continued to fight a losing battle ands Mr. Watson resigned after the home defeat by Trowbridge on the 22nd of December.

The highlight of Jim’s stay was reaching the final of the Southern League cup, Dartford came to the Windmill Ground holding the Brakes to a goalless draw in the first leg. The return game was played on the 10th of April in front of 1,830 fans and again ended without a goal and in extra time Casey, Griffin and Ollis scored to bring the cup back to the Midlands.

Jim worked for Rootes Motors in Coventry and also ran a successful re-upholstery business in Southam for many years also spending time in America.

On behalf of the Brakes Trust and everyone connected with Leamington Football Club , can we offer our deepest and sincere condolences to Denyse, the children Tracie and Darren, the grandchildren plus extended Family and friends at this sad time

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held today (20th August) at St. James Church in Southam,

Rest in Peace, Jim
