Despite not yet picking up a league point, Chesham came to the New Windmill fresh from a 2-0 away win over re-formed Farnborough in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. However, they found themselves a goal down after only one minute, when a long throw by Adam Knight from the right bounced in front of their 'keeper, Andy Hall, and Avun Jephcott was on hand to head home for his first goal of the season.
Ben Mackey could have doubled the lead on 15 minutes when he was clean through, but the striker put his right-footed shot wide of the post.
Chesham had their chances to equalise. A Danny Talbot free-kick was punched clear by Richard Morris only for Phil Turner to shoot wide and then another Talbot free-kick from outside the penalty area dipped onto the Brakes' crossbar. Morris also made a fingertip save to deny Kevin Cotton as Chesham pressed to level the match.
For Brakes, Jephcott had a golden opportunity to get a second, but his lob over Hall in the 38th minute went into the side netting.
Chesham had much the better of the second half, passing the ball well and creating a number of chances. It took a goal-line clearance from Jephcott to keep Leamington's lead intact on 62 minutes. In the end, the home defence held firm with the back three of Arron Parkinson, Martin Hier and Adam Cooper solid throughout.
The visitors deserved something from the match and the crowd of 560 greeted the final whistle with some relief.
Manager, Jason Cadden, was pleased enough saying, "This is a tough league where, sometimes, you have to dig in deep and grind out a result. We could have put the game beyond doubt if we had taken all our chances in the first half, It wasn't pretty at times today, but we put up a solid defensive display and kept our third clean sheet in a row."
