Tue, 30 Oct 2007 @ The New Windmill Ground. vs Bedworth United (1-0). ERREA Cup - 2nd Round. By D Hucker. Manager, Jason Cadden, rang the changes from Saturdays team, giving chances to a number of players who have had to wait their turn to show what they can do. Jamie Towers made a welcome return in a Brakes shirt and Richard Adams partnered Martin Thompson in attack.
In a scrappy opening spell, chances were hard to come by for both sides, although Bedworth keeper, Andrew Kemp, needed treatment after a challenge by Josh Blake, resulting in a lengthy hold-up in play.
Adams had a golden opportunity to open the scoring for Brakes on 23 minutes but, after rounding Kemp, he saw his shot blocked on the line. He was again in the thick of the action five minutes later, but Guy Barnett cut out his low cross to concede a corner which came to nothing.
However, Adams was not to be denied as, in the 34th minute, he picked up a long pass over the Bedworth defence from Ryan Parisi to slide the ball under Kemp and give Brakes the lead.
It could have been two a few minutes later, but Kemp saved well from Marcus Jackson, playing in the left wing-back role, and then Uniteds Ben Twigger was foiled by Richard Morris after a good run into the penalty area by the lively Simeon Williams.
Bedworth stepped up the tempo in the second half in search of an equaliser, but didnt look like scoring until Daniel Pithams 73rd minute effort found the back of the net, only to be ruled out for offside.
Brakes counter-attacked and on-loan Towers crashed a shot against the post after Kemp had fumbled James Husbands initial strike. Then Kemp saved well from Martin Thompson before Lee Greenway headed over for United in their last throw of the dice.
In the end, one goal was enough and Brakes can now prepare for the visit of Margate in Saturdays FA Carlsberg Trophy tie. The defence was again rock solid and Adam Cooper was just beaten to the Man of the Match award by Stuart Herlihy, who was commanding in midfield.
There were bookings for Cooper and Parisi as well as for Tom Browett and Nick Mowl of Bedworth.
