From Leamington to the Great Wall of China

Earlier this month we ran a two part article on Brakes fans doing some pretty remarkable things to raise money for charity. This prompted Brakes fan Patrick Bodger to contact us to ask if we could plug his fundraising as well – and of course we’re delighted to! So here’s, erm, part three of our two part article – Brakes fans doing great things.

In Spring 2015, Brakes fan Patrick Bodger will be undertaking quite a journey to raise funds for a charity close to his heart. We chatted to Patrick to find out more…

PB:
Next April I’ll spend ten days in China walking along the Great Wall of China to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.  This will be my third adventure to raise funds for them.  Last year I did a midnight climb of Ben Nevis and a 26 mile walk to Lindisfarne.  I thought I’d do something more interesting and challenging and more likely to gain the attention of potential sponsors.

What is the inspiration for choosing the Alzheimer’s Society?

PB:
Alzheimer’s is a condition which has had a significant impact on my maternal family and seems to have been impacting on someone close to me for most of my life. The Society do very important work with sufferers and carers and supporting them in their work is very important to me.

How far will you walk in 10 days and what are the logistics of it – are you camping along the way?

PB:
Camping? Are you kidding? I’ll be 45 when I do this!! I can’t be too far away from a shower and duvet. Standing in the micro-climate that is The New Windmill Ground is the closest I like to get to embracing the elements. As far as I’m aware we’ll be staying in local hotels and hostels and with local families in their homes along the route. The distance we’ll cover each day varies from 9 to 24 miles.

We’d like to wish Patrick all the best in his training and look forward to another update next year when the date for the trip arrives.
